Chennai Super Kings' franchise is now entangled in legal proceedings just ahead of the IPL 2026, as a copyright complaint has been lodged against its viral jersey launch video. The petition has been submitted by Sun TV Network, owners of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise, in the Madras High Court. The company has filed for damages of Rs 1 crore with the court and has alleged that CSK has plagiarized the audio clips and dialogues from renowned movies without seeking permission. The row began on March 1, when the franchise launched a promotional video on its social media handles to unveil the CSK jersey for IPL 2026. The video became an overnight sensation but later the original clip was taken down and a new version with altered audio was uploaded. The film's actor is Rajinikanth, and the composer of the song is Anirudh Ravichander. In its complaint, Sun TV Network states that numerous audio tracks were lifted by the CSK promotional video and even scenes like MS Dhoni's arrival were interspersed with the copyrighted song. “The Plaintiff submits that the Defendants (CSK) officially unveiled the new jersey for the IPL 2026 on 01.03.2026, offering fans a glimpse of the fresh design through a promotional video shared on social media pages, namely Instagram, X, YouTube and Facebook. The said video, to the surprise of the applicant, prominently used the audio tracks and dialogues from Plaintiff’s films Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie and further incorporated copyrighted audio elements at multiple junctures, including scenes depicting the arrival of MS Dhoni at the 1st Defendants' camp.” According to the production house, these elements were used without any permission. The publication states that the sales of the CSK jerseys, costing Rs 2399, have significantly escalated due to the promotional video. In the complaint filed, the production company goes on to claim that the popularity of Rajinikanth's movies and the tunes composed by Anirudh were exploited by the franchise to woo fans on the internet, especially the followers of Rajinikanth residing in Chennai. Sun TV Network has appealed to the court to restrain CSK from using any form of the copyrighted content and to also demand an explanation for the revenue generated from the promotional video. While it is common practice for multiple IPL teams to use film music in their promotional activities and social media presence, this is reportedly the first time a franchise has faced such a lawsuit for using copyrighted content. Following the controversy, CSK has removed the film's music from their content and has replaced the original promotional video with a re-edited version. The matter has gained significant traction among cricket followers as the IPL 2026 season inches closer, and has been closely observed by other franchises as well.
