Cricket will not be a part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG), which is scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. The 10th edition of CWG will feature only ten sports, meaning that cricket and other events such as field hockey, badminton, shooting, and wrestling will be left out. In defense of the decision to reduce the number of sports at the 2026 Games, Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Katie Sadleir cited budget issues. In a statement, Katie Sadleir said: "The 2026 Games will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow - an exciting first step in our journey to reset and redefine the Games as a truly collaborative, flexible and sustainable model for the future that minimises costs, reduces the environmental footprint, and enhances social impact - in doing so increasing the scope of countries capable of hosting." Cricket returned to the CWG after a 24-year absence with the women's T20 played there for the first time in 2022. Australia won the gold there, defeating India into second place in the final, while New Zealand took the bronze. The last time cricket had appeared at the CWG before 2022 was in 1998, when South Africa won the men's ODI gold. In the 2022 edition of Hangzhou, which actually featured in the year 2023 on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, India both won gold medals in men's and women's T20 events, with Afghanistan and Bangladesh finishing in silver and bronze positions respectively in the men's and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh managed silver and bronze positions each in the women's. Well, cricket is not included in the CWG, but it is going to appear in the Olympic Games for the first time after 128 years in Los Angeles in 2028. Men's and women's T20 cricket are included in the Olympic event as one of five new sports on the recommendation by an International Olympic Committee meeting held in Mumbai last October. The director of LA2028 local organising committee, Niccolo Campriani, had said: "Some of you might be wondering why [cricket] in LA, well, the commitment to grow cricket in the US is real, and it's already happening with the launch of the very first Major League Cricket season earlier this year, which exceeded all expectations. And the [men's] T20 World Cup in 2024 coming to US and West Indies."
