India might have had a few hiccups in the chase but at the end of the day, they did seem to have won the match quite comfortably. Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, debutant Harshit Rana and the newly appointed vice-capatin of the team- Shubman Gill were the architects of India's clinical win in the first ODI against England in Nagpur. The hosts won the match by 4 wickets with 68 balls still in the bank. Putting a break to England's flyer The English skipper, Jos Buttler decided to have a bat after winning the toss and his call was turning out to be perfect in the beginning as the England openers got off to a blistering start. The partnership of Philip Salt and Ben Duckett had touched the mark of 75 runs even before the completion of the 9th over while they were smashing the Indian bowlers all over the park. That is when Salt got into a bit of confusion mid-pitch and was run out by miles in the 9th over by a wonderful throw from Shreyas Iyer. In the very next over which was also the last of the powerplay, debutant Harshit Rana removed Duckett and Harry Brook, reducing the visitors to 77/3 after 10 overs. Clinical middle overs What followed the powerplay of the first innings was a tight and tidy bowling performance by the Indian bowlers, especially the spinners who didn't allow the English batters to score freely and also kept picking the wickets at regular intervals. Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets, giving away 26 runs with an economy of just 2.9. Md. Shami, Axar and Kuldeep Yadav ended up with one wicket each while Rana also had 3 scalps to his name. Jaiswal was looking good but a peach from Jofra Archer caused his downfall while Rohit continued his poor run, getting dismissed by Saqib Mahmood on just 2 runs- reducing India to a score of 19/2 after 5.2 overs. It was now time for a thundering counter-attacking knock from Shreyas Iyer who punished anything that was slightly loose and completed his fifty in just 30 deliveries. Iyer, who got a place in the team only because Virat Kohli wasn't 100% fit, ended up scoring 59 after a 94 run stand with VC Gill. Axar came in at no. 5 after being promoted up the order and didn't disappoint. Him and Gill were involved in a wonderful 108 run partnership which sealed the game for India. Axar and Gill scored 52 and 87 respectively, before walking back to the pavillion along with KL Rahul- who fell very cheaply. The fall of these 3 quick wickets didn't bother the team much as the game was alredy in their bag and Hardik Pandya managed to finish off the game alongside Jadeja, therefore winning the match by 4 wickets. India would be quite happy with their overall performance even though they do have a few things to pay attention to. The team management would be hoping for better bowling in the powerplay, a stable opening partnership and the return of Rahul to good form as the two teams will now head to Cuttack for the 2nd ODI.
