The next Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections have acquired new meaning as previous India greats Shanta Rangaswamy and Venkatesh Prasad, along with former KSCA treasurer Vinay Mruthyunjaya, released their manifesto. Their key promise: the restoration of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to its best previous times following the unfortunate stampede that rocked Bengaluru earlier this year. The June tragedy, which took place during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL winning party, killed 11 people and injured dozens. A government committee then labeled the iconic ground "unsafe for large-scale events," leading to the shifting of international games, home season matches like the Maharaja T20, and even matches of the Women's ODI World Cup. Former KSCA vice-president Venkatesh Prasad said: “We would like to bring back international cricket. Every international match has been moved out of Bangalore. It’s such an iconic venue, Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has been standing for the last 50 years. This is something which has never happened. Even our own Maharaja Cup has also been moved out which is not a good thing.” Also Read | Former India Pacer Venkatesh Prasad to Contest KSCA Elections 2025 Prioritising Safety and Fan Experience The manifesto puts the safety of spectators at the center of its dream. The judicial commission that probed the stampede underscored chronic design faults in the stadium, including ill-designed entry gates that opened directly into public roads and insufficient holding areas. Vinay Mruthyunjaya left no doubt about what they intended: "We would definitely like to review the recommendations of the Judicial Commission with respect to the government agencies. There will be no compromise with respect to the safety of the fans, safety of the spectators, safety of the cricketers. When it comes to safety, we want to give priority to that." In addition to the mitigative measures of the safety lapses, the team plans to revamp Chinnaswamy into a "future-ready smart stadium." This includes: Digital ticketing and e-gates to minimize congestion Innovative crowd management systems Participatory technologies for connecting with fans for a richer stadium experience Increased seating from 35,000 to 50,000 in the face of engineering constraints Also Read | Shreyas Iyer Snubbed from Asia Cup 2025 Squad Despite Form Heritage, Legacy, and Building Trust Though the tragedy plunged the KSCA into a credibility crisis, with the secretary and treasurer posts lying vacant, the manifesto seeks to regain government and people's trust. Getting timely state sanctions is a prerequisite for the BCCI to grant international matches, and the leadership group has committed to tighter cooperation with the authorities. Mruthyunjaya admitted the challenge: "One of the preconditions whenever the BCCI allots matches, they give us a deadline to get the state government permission. If we don’t get the permission, they will not host the matches… we are going to work together to see that as and when the match comes to Bangalore, we will put our efforts to get the necessary permissions from the government agencies." The manifesto also includes cultural and heritage projects in the offing: A VR-enabled Lord's-style cricket museum and Karnataka cricket history Naming the stadium stops after Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid Stands in honor of Shanta Rangaswamy and ex-BCCI Secretary C. Nagaraj With elections likely to be held in October–November 2025, the campaign is an expression not just to bring back Chinnaswamy Stadium but also to make Bengaluru its place on world cricket's map again.
