Excitement is building for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the cricket fraternity, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gearing up to unveil the Test squad for the five-match Test series against Australia. The final selection, anticipated to be made after the second Test against New Zealand in Pune, is expected to be announced on October 28. India is currently playing a three-match Test series against New Zealand at home. After losing the first match in Bengaluru, the Men in Blue are determined to bounce back, aiming to win the remaining two matches. The upcoming selection meeting is set to tackle some important decisions, with a potential return for Cheteshwar Pujara emerging as a key discussion point, according to the Times of India. Absent from the national squad since the WTC final in 2023, Pujara’s extensive experience, particularly in Australia, strengthens his case for a comeback. In 25 Test matches against Australia, Cheteshwar Pujara has accumulated 2,074 runs at an impressive average of 49.38. His performances include 5 centuries and 11 half centuries. In the 2018-19 series against Australia, Pujara was at his peak, amassing 521 runs and helping India clinch a historic series victory. He backed that up with another notable performance in the 2020-21 series, contributing 271 runs. Pujara’s recent domestic form has further strengthened his chances of rejoining the squad. He scored 234 off 383 balls against Chattisgarh in the last Ranji Trophy round. As the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, deliberates, they must carefully consider Pujara’s experience against the Australian team before finalizing the squad, keeping the team balance in mind.
