Ambati Rayudu has opened up about the experience of batting for Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk Stadium, describing how it can be daunting for a newcomer. He pointed out how the crowd's overwhelming love for MS Dhoni sometimes makes it challenging for other players. Rayudu, who represented CSK from 2018 to 2023, shared his opinion on the unique atmosphere in Chennai while speaking to ESPNCricinfo. "It's been happening for quite a few years now, and quite a few players have felt it over the years. We also love MS Dhoni, and they also love MS Dhoni and we want to see him bat, but sometimes when you, as an individual, are going out to bat they are shouting from the crowd to… literally asking you to get out. Or they are anticipating or expecting you to get out," he said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. Reflecting further, Rayudu pointed out how strange the situation can be. "So it is quite strange, and I don't think it actually serves the game well to be very honest." He recalled how, during Tendulkar's era, the fall of the second Indian wicket in Test matches would often lead to cheers from the crowd. "It's almost a throwback to the days of Sachin Tendulkar, when, in Test matches, the fall of the second India wicket would be the cue for great joy for the crowd," Rayudu said. He further highlighted how some Chennai fans are primarily fans of Dhoni, sometimes more than the franchise itself. "It is quite daunting if you're a newcomer. The support is phenomenal. But, as you go on and play, then you realise they are MS Dhoni fans before they are CSK fans," he said. Rayudu believes the best way to address the issue would be for Dhoni himself to step in and urge fans to support all players equally. "I don't know if MS Dhoni will ever address that. He has not addressed that in the past as well. I don't know if it's the right thing to do for him as well," Rayudu said. He further suggested how Dhoni's words could make a significant difference. "The best person who can address that is MS Dhoni himself. If he comes out and says, 'They are all our players, and just like me batting, they are batting in the middle,' or something like that to soothe the crowd, it will be great for the players," Rayudu added. Chennai Super Kings will return to action on Friday, March 28, facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai.
