CLT20: A Forgotten Global Showdown in Franchise Cricket New generation cricket fans may not be aware, but the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) once decided the ultimate global T20 franchise champion. Launched in 2008 and first held in 2009, the CLT20 was a joint venture between the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa. Modeled after football’s UEFA Champions League, the tournament brought together top domestic T20 teams from across the cricketing world — including the IPL, Big Bash, Ram Slam, and Caribbean Premier League. The format allowed the best teams from each country to compete for a total prize pool of $6 million. Indian teams dominated the competition, with Chennai Super Kings emerging as the final champions in 2014. Despite its promise, CLT20 was discontinued in 2015 due to poor viewership, waning interest outside India, and unstable sponsorship. Still, it played a crucial role in highlighting emerging talent. Notably, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, and Chris Morris earned IPL contracts based on their CLT20 performances.
