India's ODI and Test skipper, Rohit Sharma, is known to open for Mumbai Indians too, and has made a grand comeback this IPL. After a few games where he hardly made a mark, Rohit seemed to have rediscovered his old self as he blasted an unbeaten 76 off 45 deliveries, leading MI to another rout, this time over Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets at the Wankhede. While his scintillating innings made to cheer fans across the land, one particular Instagram post he made about Abhishek Nayar, the recently sacked assistant coach of India, was a head turner. Abhishek Nayar's offer of services to Team India has come to an unfortunate end, having joined as assistant coach in July 2024 for only eight months. Although the BCCI has not formally announced Nayar's return, he is already back with KKR as an assistant coach, having been identified in KKR's dugout during their clash with the Gujarat Titans. It has also been reported recently whether Rohit Sharma was consulted for the sacking of Nayar; curiously, Rohit thanked Nayar in his post-match comments after the CSK game, but that report reiterates he was not involved in the decision. The report further states that he was consulted for the initial appointment of Nayar. With the return of Gautam Gambhir to KKR as mentor for IPL 2024, wherein he was instrumental in winning another title for KKR, Nayar was chosen as one of his coaching appointments. He was subsequently appointed as India's head coach and given complete autonomy to create his team. Nayar joined Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel, whom Gambhir had also recommended and who remain part of the coaching setup. He was involved with KKR from 2018 to 2024 and played a critical role in nurturing young talent through the franchise's academy. Despite never coaching at the domestic level, Nayar comes with a substantial cricketing background. The former India all-rounder played three ODIs for the national team in 2009 and was a domestic superstar with 103 first-class, 99 List A and 95 T20 games. He made his presence felt in the IPL representing Misses State Warriors, Rajasthan Royals, and Pune Warriors before calling it a day from domestic cricket in 2019.
