Canada Super 60, the country’s pioneering cricket league, has announced that its first-ever women’s trophy will bear the name of former Australian cricketer Mel Jones. The league, scheduled at Vancouver’s iconic BC Place, will feature both men’s and women’s competitions in a unique 10-over-a-side format. International stars and homegrown Canadian talent will compete in this inaugural season. As part of its commitment to celebrating women’s cricket, Canada Super 60 intends to honor an international women’s cricket legend each year by naming the trophy after them. This initiative aims to raise awareness and recognize trailblazers whose contributions have shaped the global women’s game. This year, Mel Jones has been selected for her outstanding achievements in cricket, broadcasting, and leadership off the field. She coordinated their evacuation to Australia, facilitated resources, and co-founded the Pitch Our Future initiative to support their education and sporting careers. Thanks to her advocacy, several Afghan players, including two now in Canada, were able to continue their cricketing journeys after receiving government support for refugee applications. Jones said, “This honour from Canada Super 60 truly humbles me. To have the Women’s Trophy named after me is something very special. What excites me most is the vision behind this initiative, creating more opportunities and visibility for women’s cricket, especially in associate nations." She added, “Platforms like Canada Super 60 will inspire and empower a new generation of players. I hope that one day, a Canadian cricket legend will have this trophy named after them, as the women’s game continues to grow in this country.”
