The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025 being just a night away, the match has already turned into a buzzword off the field. As the Indian government granted clearance to the BCCI to enable the men's team to play against Pakistan, many fans and even a few former players are still dissatisfied with the move. Boycott demands have only increased, particularly following the terror attack on Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor that followed. Government's Call and Growing Fan Backlash The Indian government had given late clearance to Team India to play at the Asia Cup, including the high-octane group stage match against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. But several fans have shown outrage, maintaining that the side should not play against their biggest rivals. Politicians and retired cricketers have also complained, continuing the controversy further. Quirky enough, the two boards had previously committed not to have each other at home grounds, limiting India-Pakistan cricket to only neutral grounds in multilateral events. Nevertheless, pressure from some fans is still immense in the lead-up to Sunday's match. Also Read | Why Aren’t India vs Pakistan Tickets Sold Out for Asia Cup 2025? What Happens if India Boycotts? If the Indian players choose to boycott the Pakistan match, the result is simple, the game would be considered a forfeit. Pakistan would get full points, and India's campaign might take a huge blow. The World Championship of Legends (WCL) of recent times also depicted a similar instance. Previous Indian players in the Indian Champions team did not want to play Pakistan Champions and forfeited the match. India's team ultimately got eliminated from the tournament, whereas Pakistan proceeded further. If that situation is repeated in the Asia Cup, Pakistan may be given a smooth way ahead. Indeed, if India and Pakistan play each other again in the Super 4s or in the final, losing those matches would directly earn Pakistan the title. Is there any Chance of the Match Being Called Off? In spite of calls for boycotting, the likelihood of the match being cancelled or India boycotting is extremely low. Sitanshu Kotak, the assistant coach, has recently reinforced the team's attention to cricket and not external disruptions. Kotak said: "Once we are here to play, we are focused on playing cricket. I personally don't think there is anything on my mind apart from playing cricket." For the players, defying the government's stance would attract controversy and disciplinary issues. Up to now, all indications are that the game will proceed as originally scheduled, unless a last-minute plot twist derails the script. They are set to play, with no indications of backing out. It makes it even more necessary for India to intervene, as avoiding the face-off would only give Pakistan the upper hand without even getting a ball. As things are, all indications point to the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 match being held in DICS, Dubai on September 14. The only remaining issue is if the crowd and TV viewership will be as usual or influenced by the boycott calls going on.
