The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) suspended its joint secretary, Debabrata Das, following allegations of financial irregularities. This is a significant move for Bengal cricket, as it marks the first time action has been taken against such a senior official. Debabrata Das has been suspended from engaging in any CAB activities or occupying any positions for six months. The Bengal cricket administration has also initiated a thorough inquiry into his financial transactions and grievances against him. Allegations Against Debabrata Das Das has been charged with accepting money from individuals in lieu of assurance for selection into Bengal teams or clubs associated with the CAB. He is also accused of having abused CAB funds by sanctioning food bills of Town Club players and presenting them as CAB's canteen expenditures. He has also been charged with forcing players to play for Town Club by verbally promising them that they would get selected into Bengal teams in the future. As a second step, CAB has also halted disbursals to Town Club, which is led by Das. The CAB's Apex Council stated the investigation would be completed in six months. Then, further action will be taken depending on the outcome. Previous in August, the CAB had issued a show cause notice to Das. He was charged with withholding nearly ₹7 lakh from ticket sale proceeds that were meant for the association and retaining money meant for East Bengal and Town Club's entry into tournaments. The CAB directed him to return the amount within 15 days. It is not the first time that Das was in the news due to controversy. He was previously embroiled in a public spat with ex-India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Saha had alleged that Das had challenged his commitment towards the Bengal team, prompting Saha to switch sides to play for Tripura.
