Fast-bowling ace Jasprit Bumrah was among the hot favourites to spearhead Indian cricket in Test cricket upon Rohit Sharma's resignation in May. As a matter of fact, his own appointment as captain was a no-brainer, given that he was already the vice-captain and was also captain for a couple of matches during the tour of Australia. But a bolt from the blue was the declaration when Shubman Gill was appointed the team captain for the future by the national selectors. Gill will be accompanying England on his maiden assignment as Test captain. The tour is to receive India for five matches, beginning June 20 at Leeds. Before the series, Bumrah has finally opened up on why the selection committee and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not declare him the leader of the team in red-ball format. The communication prompted Bumrah himself to step back from the role because of workload issues. Here is what Bumrah told Sky Sports in an interview "Before Rohit [Sharma] & Virat [Kohli] retired - During the IPL, I had spoken to BCCI, that I have discussed workload going forward in a five-match Test series, [and that] I have spoken to people who manage my back. We came to conclusion that we have to be little more smart, then I called the BCCI that I don't want to be looked at the leadership role because I won't be able to play all the Test matches," BCCI was looking at me as the leadership role, but I have to say no to them because it's not ideal when someone is leading for 3 Tests then some others have to lead rest of the tests so it's not fair for the team as I wanted to put team first," Also Read | ICC Considers 4-Day Tests for Smaller Teams Although the appointment of Gill might have been unexpected, it was only just since the fast bowler Bumrah might not have been able to handle the rigours of the home-away tours. As the front-line bowler, the Indian team wishes Bumrah to be in top condition and make contributions with the ball in terms of winning key games for the team in the England series, and in the distant future as well, as much as the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle is concerned. India will kick off their new WTC cycle with the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, starting June 20, with Bumrah leading the preparations.
