India didn't think twice about diverting attention away from their Asia Cup triumph to the Test series coming up against West Indies and got into gear for it at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. There was hardly two days' gap between the white-ball final and the first Test of the World Test Championship cycle, but the team and support staff went all out. Less than 48 hours of taking the Asia Cup, the Indian Test team gathered in Ahmedabad for a close to three-hour training session. Senior players, however, were rested in the persons of Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel, while the remainder of the team, which also included captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, attended the practice session. The practice started with mild warm-ups and catching practice before entering the nets. Batters spent prolonged sessions against pace and spin, whereas bowlers trained in test simulations. Gill, on the other hand, struggled with edges outside and ascending balls in preparation for his first home Test as permanent captain. India's opening order seemed to be in top gear with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul playing alongside each other, with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who captained India A recently, playing some bright strokes with the bat. Middle-order batter B Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal had a splendid session, making life difficult for the management to select the XI. The biggest point of discussion is the additional batter's place in the XI. Padikkal's recent form makes him the obvious choice, but Reddy's potential to make an impact with the ball could upset the balance, particularly on a track offering grass and bounce. With Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar being near certainties, the management has the luxury of adjusting combinations based on the pitch.
