Team India has begun preparations for the second Test against England at Birmingham's Edgbaston after a short break. Behind 0-1 in the five-match series, the visitors began training with a rigorous fielding session, concentrating on catching and direct hits an issue following eight catches dropped in the first Test. All but Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna of the bowlers participated in the net practice. Mohammed Siraj bowled not a ball but practiced batting along with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, preparing for dealing with short-pitched balls. Bumrah and Prasidh, meanwhile, confined themselves to running and fitness exercises, and Siraj joined the nets later. Interestingly, all three pacers did not bowl. According to reports, Bumrah could be rested for the second Test, with the decision likely to come on the eve of the match. The Edgbaston wicket is likely to provide more spin than Headingley, leading to Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar being asked to bowl long spells in addition to Ravindra Jadeja. Their bowling is said to have troubled Rishabh Pant in practice and now many are calling for Kuldeep's inclusion in the playing XI. In the likely absence of Bumrah, either Akash Deep or Arshdeep Singh might find their way into the team. The two seamers practiced with the new and old ball. Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy were also part of the practice, playing the role of all-rounders. An optional practice session has been arranged for Saturday, June 28. Whether India's pace bowlers will practice remains to be seen.
