On Day 1 of the ongoing 2nd Test between England and India at Edgbaston, there was a strange incident in India's 34th over. England fast bowler Brydon Carse, while bowling with a slightly different run-up, extended his hand in mid-stride which appeared to puzzle Indian skipper Shubman Gill. As Carse began his run-up after the third delivery of the over, he extended his left hand outside and seemed to point towards the left. The gesture was done at the last moment before he began bowling, and Shubman Gill, who was at the crease, suddenly pulled himself out of his batting stance. Obviously distracted, Gill requested stopping the delivery. He even conversed briefly with his teammates and had a confused look on his face when the umpire raised a dead ball signal. Although it is common for bowlers to tweak their run-up or moves, gestures in the approach tend to get batters confused, particularly if it is out of the blue. By doing this, they create an opportunity of wicket for their side. However, on the very next ball, Carse delivered a 150 kmph quick inswinger that hit Shubman Gill on the pad. England went up in an aggressive appeal for LBW and even took a DRS review. But replays indicated a thick inside edge, saving Gill. The review was wasted, and the distraction created by Carse on the previous delivery turned into a talking point among fans. Indian skipper Shubman Gill, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, is steadying India's innings post-lunch. The young, yet talented duo has survived some quality spell from Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse and are looking well settled at the crease. After 40 overs, India is at 143-2 with Jaiswal aiming for his second Test ton of the series.
