Brian Bennett has been sidelined from the ongoing first Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa in Bulawayo. The Zimbabwean opener sustained a blow to the helmet from a sharp bouncer bowled by Kwena Maphaka during the sixth over of the opening innings. Attempting a pull shot, Bennett misjudged the pace, resulting in the ball taking the top edge and striking his helmet. At the time of the incident, he was batting on 19 from 25 balls. The medical staff conducted the obligatory concussion test, following ICC regulations. Bennett kept batting after passing through but did not look completely okay. Within a matter of two overs, 8th, Bennett retired from the field. He retired hurt and later on, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed that Bennett has been diagnosed with a mild concussion and would not further participate in the match because of the concussion protocols. Under new ICC regulations implemented last week, sides are required to designate five concussion replacements prior to the match. Incorporating these, Zimbabwe has appointed Prince Masvaure as his standby. So, he's a like-for-like cover for Bennett. Masvaure will be fielding during the second innings and also bat. But he didn't appear to be fine and eventually walked off the field, retiring hurt. After additional checks, he was confirmed to have a mild concussion and will not participate any further in the match. Zimbabwe appointed Prince Masvaure as his substitute, in accordance with the new ICC regulations. Masvaure will now come onto the field and also bat in the innings.
