India clinched a thrilling six-run victory against England in the last Test of the five-match series at London's Kennington Oval. The victory helped India draw the series 2-2 and share the newly inaugurated Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with England. The game seemed to end on Day 4, and that is when Player of the Series awards were decided. As with present-day tradition in England, one player from a team is selected as the Player of the Series by the head coach of the opposing team. England's coach Brendon McCullum had selected Indian captain Shubman Gill for the award. But all changed after the game was carried over to Day 5. McCullum Had Someone Else in Mind After Day 5 In an interview with Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik revealed that McCullum had Gill in mind first before the match concluded on Day 4. Presentation host Michael Atherton had already done the ceremony and questions based on the assumption that Gill would be the player chosen. Brendon McCullum had said Shubman Gill. And obviously, Atherton [Mike Atherton] was the one doing the presentation. So, he had all the questions ready. Everything was for Shubman Gill." But the match carried over into Day 5 because of rain, and a performance by Mohammed Siraj on the last day convinced McCullum otherwise. DK added: "Baz McCullum turned it around in a matter of half an hour, 40 minutes - to Mohammed Siraj, He even spoke about him in the post-match with Sky Sports - about how he enjoyed watching Siraj bowl and all the eloquent things he had to say about him." While McCullum would have liked a new name after seeing a game-changing performance on Day 5, the initial choice held good because of it being decided prior to Day 5's game.
