Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from ODI cricket, ending a celebrated 149-match career that included two World Cup titles and some of the most iconic innings in the format. The 36-year-old made the announcement on the Final Word podcast, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo, confirming that his body could no longer handle the demands of the 50-over game. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how body was reacting to the conditions," Maxwell said. “I asked [Australia chair of selectors] George Bailey what his thoughts were going forward. We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him, ‘I don’t think I am going to make that.’” Maxwell retires with 3990 ODI runs at a strike rate of 126.70, which is the second-highest ever among batters with 2000+ runs, along with 77 wickets. Despite not playing red-ball cricket for Australia since 2017, he has not formally retired from Tests. However, Maxwell made it clear he wants to focus on T20Is and has his eyes on the 2026 T20 World Cup.
