If it was a fight from India or just Jasprit Bumrah is still debatable, as the team collapsed without him in the second inning at Sydney. India lost the fifth and final Test at Sydney by 6 wickets, that too having two and a half days left in it. In the entire Border Gavaskar Trophy, India has one win—a huge 295-run win at Perth that came under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy. It came right after a 0-3 humiliating whitewash against New Zealand at home. A controversial team selection, transition of coaching unit, breaking records of defeats, and then Perth's win ignited hopes! And then arrived the 10-wicket defeat, serving as a realization to the fans that "hope" is big. The team seemed so fragile that a rain-fed draw seemed like a victory. The dressing room erupted in joy and highfives, with mere bowler Akash Deep saving a follow-on! Prior to the Melbourne match, Ravindra Jadeja clarified to the media that they need one more win in the series to "retain" the trophy! A 114-run inning from Nitish Reddy got wasted at Melbourne, and India suffered again with a massive 184-run defeat. He led the team, batted for India, and gave breakthroughs and even sledged, which is unusual. As a lower-order batter, Bumrah scored 42 runs, let aside taking 32 wickets, including 3 five-fors. He had some niggle in his calf in one of the previous Tests, but Sydney suffered the extreme. After delivering one, post lunch, he had to leave for scans, handing over captaincy responsibilities to Virat Kohli. From there on, Kohli led his bowlers, took four rapid wickets, and restricted Australia to 181, with a four-run deficit. But Indian batting collapsed again. Barring 61 runs from Rishabh Pant, there was no such decent contribution from the Indian batters. The edge of the bat continued haunting Kohli, as he also made an early exit. India's hope collapsed after Jadeja left on Day 3's morning, and India was curtailed at 157, when at least 200 were needed on the board! Without Bumrah, there was the struggling Mohammad Siraj, the batting all-rounder Nitish Reddy, and Prasidh Krishna, who was playing his third international Test match. Yet, Krishna pulled out a total of 6 wickets in the Test, but fell short of a win. Sam Konstas had already accelerated the inning with a 17-ball 22-run cameo on the top. The rest of the job was done by Usman Khawaja (41), Travis Head (34*), and the debutant Beau Webster (39*). Scattered batting throughout, Bumrah running out of bowling support from the other end, and clueless captaincy in the previous three Tests cost India's 10 years of pride, with them being disqualified for the World Test Championship final for the first time as well.
