Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer delivered one of the most clutch innings of IPL 2025, guiding his side into the final with a nerveless 87* off just 41 balls against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. Iyer soaked in the pressure of the knockout clash in Ahmedabad and came out roaring as PBKS chased down 204 with six balls to spare. After the match, a calm but beaming Iyer opened up about his mindset on the big stage. “I don’t know, to be honest. I love big occasions. I say to myself and my colleagues, the bigger the occasion, the calmer you are, and you’ll get the best results. Today I was focusing on my breathing rather than sweating it out,” he said, giving fans a glimpse into how he handles pressure. PBKS did lose early wickets in the chase, but Iyer remained composed, soaking up deliveries before unleashing his explosive best. While the youngsters in the team could not contribute much with the bat on Sunday, they have been one of the reasons why the team managed to reach the final. “All the players need to be assertive. Show intent from ball one. We weren’t able to capitalise on the start, but the intent was stupendous. Even for me, when I went out there, I had to take some time, but the batsman at the other end, he was striking pretty well. I know the more time I spend on the field, the better I play and my vision also gets better,” Iyer added. With this win, PBKS now face RCB in the final on June 3. I am just staying in the moment, cherish the situation. I want to go to the dressing room and celebrate with team-mates about getting into the final. But in my mind the job is only half done, so I don’t want to think too much about the final,” he said. Kane Williamson on Kohli's Test retirement: ‘oh gosh, there’s an end point’ The PBKS captain also took a moment to appreciate the young talent in the team. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have been the performers for PBKS at the top, with uncapped players Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh stepping up whenever the team needed a finisher. “I just let them be, don’t ask too much of them. I love the fearless nature we bring onto the table, the ideas they share. Talk to any of them and they’ll have a fair set of ideas on how to play a situation. Even if they haven’t got that much experience, I feel they have that brave nature, and in such big occasions, it’s important they need to gain more experience.”
