India secured one of their all-time greatest Test wins on Monday (August 4) at The Oval when they defeated England by the margin of just six runs. It was the final match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and the series had been 1-2 prior to the match. England dominated, and India required a miracle to remain in the match. Having set India a target of 374, India seemed to be losing the match on Day 4. England were moving along smoothly at 317/4, courtesy of dazzling hundreds by Joe Root and Harry Brook. But towards the end of the final session, India's bowlers staged a comeback. Prasidh Krishna removed two batters and Akash Deep picked up one just as play was interrupted due to rain. Only 35 runs were required on the last day, but England weren't out of the woods yet. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna played with heart and vigor. Siraj dismissed Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton, while Krishna dispatched Josh Tongue with a lethal yorker. England were nine down in no time and they required 17 runs to win the game. Gus Atkinson, who earlier troubled India with the ball, caused India a fright with a six and some intelligent running. But Siraj struck back and claimed the last wicket, wrapping up India's thrilling six-run win. It was India's narrowest run victory in Test cricket history. Former Indian skipper and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar described it as an even bigger victory than India's historic Gabba win in 2021, when they defeated Australia despite being without key players. "This victory is bigger than Gabba," he claimed. India tied the five-match series 2-2 and registered a powerful start to a new era under Shubman Gill's leadership with this victory. Siraj was declared Player of the Match for his match-winning effort of 5/104.
