India’s young Test captain, Shubman Gill, is on the brink of rewriting multiple pages of cricket history as the fifth and final Test against England kicks off at The Oval. With four centuries in as many matches this series, Gill has already joined the elite club of players with 700-plus runs in a single Test series in SENA countries, standing level with the legendary Garry Sobers who scored 722 in 1966. At just 25, Gill has not only led from the front but turned this tour into a personal landmark. He now needs just one more run to break Sobers’ record for most runs in a SENA Test series by an overseas captain. Ten more runs would see him eclipse Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 in the 1978–79 West Indies series — the current Indian record for runs by a captain in a single series. Another 31 runs will push Gill past Graham Gooch’s 752, the all-time highest aggregate in an India-England series. A bigger milestone looms at 774 runs — Gavaskar’s all-time Indian record for any Test series. If Gill scores 78 more, he’ll become the first Asian batter to breach 800 in a single series. What makes it more historic is that only three men in the history of Test cricket have ever crossed 900 runs in a single series — Don Bradman, Wally Hammond, and Mark Taylor. To join them, Gill would need a monumental 178-run knock at The Oval. And if he dares to dream bigger, Don Bradman’s long-standing record of 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes series would require 253 more — not impossible, but certainly immortal if achieved. Gill also stands a century away from becoming the first Indian to score five centuries in one series. If he does that, he’ll go past all Indian captains and tie with Clyde Walcott’s global record set back in 1955. Records Within Reach at The Oval for Gill Should Gill extend his purple patch at The Oval, here’s what he could achieve: Record Target Runs needed Most runs in India-England series (Graham Gooch – 752) 31 Most runs in a Test series for India (Gavaskar – 774) 53 First Asian to 800 runs in a Test series 78 Bradman's record as captain (810 in 1936-37) 89 900+ runs in a series (Only Bradman & Hammond) 178 All-time most (Bradman – 974, 1930 Ashes) 253 Possible Century Milestones 5th century: First Indian with 5 tons in a Test series First Indian captain to score a ton at The Oval Most centuries in a series by any captain (currently tied with Bradman and Gavaskar) Ties Clyde Walcott’s global record (5 tons in 1955 series) Notably, the fifth Test will be starting on July 31st. Besides Gill's personal milestones, he would like to lead his team to win the Test match to avoid a series defeat, as the series hands in 2-1 in England's favour.
