The recent draft of The Hundred produced some of the biggest news as Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed became one of the main talking points. The bowler was roped in by Sunrisers Leeds, a team co-owned by the same people behind Sunrisers Hyderabad. The 27-year-old signed with the Leeds franchise for £190,000 on Thursday during the player draft and quickly generated buzz among the fans. Following the signing, fans took to social media and started trolling Kavya Maran who is closely associated with the Sunrisers franchise. Being popular among fans for his wicket celebrations where he uses a similar motion to Harry Potter (thus his nickname among fans) he has now got the chance to showcase his abilities in one of England's highly watched short-format leagues. There were reports prior to the auction that franchises owned by Indians in The Hundred would prevent Pakistan players from being picked in the draft but these claims seem to be null and void as Sunrisers Leeds managed to acquire Ahmed in the auction. Following these statements, both the board and the franchise owners have released a joint statement clarifying that the auction is open to players of all countries. Another Pakistani bowler Usman Tariq was also signed earlier in the same draft by Birmingham Phoenix, and became the first Pakistani to be drafted. However, Ahmed's signing received far more attention. He has previously been part of leagues such as the Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, Bangladesh Premier League and has recently represented Pakistan in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. In his previous tournament appearances for Pakistan, Ahmed picked up a modest six wickets. His best figures during the tournament were against Sri Lanka where he picked up three wickets for twenty three runs.
