Following the absence in the last Test against England at The Oval, India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is now set to return for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The Asia Cup will be hosted by the UAE from September 9 to 28 and will be in the T20 format. Defending champions India open their campaign on September 10 against the UAE. Bumrah had been given a rest in the fifth Test under a BCCI workload management plan. The board had previously determined that he would feature in only three of the five Tests of the England series to keep him safe from future injuries. This was following his intense workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-25, which raised injury fears. Even criticism from a few fans and ex-players for missing such an important game in such a closely fought series did not change the management's mind. Bumrah had already played in Leeds, Lord's, and Manchester, taking 14 wickets at 26 runs per wicket. Skipping the Oval Test was precautionary, not as an intend to punishment. His subsequent long Test series would be against Australia at home in 2027. In between, India's Test engagements consist of shorter two-match series against South Africa and the West Indies. A BCCI official confirmed that the decision was not an easy one and the board would require a long-term strategy to deal with Bumrah's future in Tests. His availability is now going to be picky, subject to his fitness and the requirements of the team. PTI quoted a BCCI source saying: "There is an Asia Cup around the corner, and the T20 World Cup is also there. He would want to play those events. Considering his body, he can't play every game. He needs to be managed with extra care. Playing him at The Oval would have been a huge risk. Going forward, there needs to be a clear plan on how to manage Bumrah’s Test career." Quote from Ryan ten Doeschate (assistant coach of India): "It's a tricky problem. We have opted to respect his wish. He has bowled 119 overs in the series, and we have to take care of him." A meeting between selectors and BCCI officials is due imminently to consider Bumrah's Test future. His form continues to be good, but his fitness needs to be handled carefully as India targets crucial white-ball titles in the coming two years.
