It's being reported that Virat Kohli is going to retire from all Test cricket. The ex-Indian captain had already informed the BCCI of his decision, which stunned the board, and not only was Kohli one of India's top Test match players, but the BCCI was hoping to eventually get him back as Test captain. Just three days back he retired, Rohit Sharma had retired from Test cricket, but sources said that Rohit and the BCCI had been working on the change for some time and the board had actually already begun to strategize on who Rohit's replacement was going to be. The board was again looking at Kohli as the man to lead the side. BCCI source told PTI: “It is true that selectors did think about having Kohli as India skipper for the England series.” To their shock, Kohli did not just turn the leadership position down, but made the unthinkable decision to retire from red-ball cricket. This left BCCI's plans in tatters. Shubman Gill has always been seen as the long-term successor to Rohit in Tests, but has not yet established himself in the format. The board wanted to introduce him to the captain's role carefully. As if to exacerbate the situation, your first task in charge is against the English! Now we're going to be rational-it's not like BCCI has much choices left. They've had issues with Jasprit Bumrah's fitness, so they think he can't handle the workload. KL Rahul is 33, so forget that. Rishabh Pant hasn't played great leadership cricket either. The only other option is Gill, the BCCI wanted Kohli to fill the gap, but that certainly seems closed. The Source revealed: “This would have given Gill some time to grow into the leadership role, but at 25-and-a-half years of age, he is yet to hit his peak. Due to Bumrah’s fitness issues, Gill looks like the obvious choice for Ajit Agarkar’s committee.”
