One of the biggest talking points last season of IPL was this 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the batting prodigy from Bihar. His aggressive batting and match-winning innings for the Rajasthan Royals won over the fans. However, his swift rise through the ranks has placed BCCI in a dilemma whether such a young player should be even permitted to play in such a competitive T20 league of the world. How the Debate Erupted During last Sunday’s BCCI Annual General Meeting, Sanjay Naik from the Mumbai Cricket Association raised the pertinent question of how a 14-year-old would be eligible to play in the IPL. He referred to the tournament as T20 Mumbai, which doesn't allow players younger than 16 years. His query opened the lid, propelling board members into a wider discussion on the BCCI having to reassess IPL eligibility guidelines. Many wondered whether Suryavanshi was in fact an anomaly or whether the existing setup of the league actually opens space for a player so young. According to Amin, the selection of Vaibhav Suryavanshi was entirely in accordance with the rules. For any players who had an appearance in first-class cricket for their state, the IPL would automatically qualify them for selection. According to the IPL rule book, any under-19 player who has played either first-class or List A cricket for his state will be eligible to register for the auction. Since matches of the IPL are classified under List A, Suryavanshi has all the rights to take part in the tournament. While Amin's elaboration cleared the initial confusion, it also led to a discussion at a wider level about whether the present rules needed reviewing, especially in the context of some players still in their early teens. His achievement may generate a new dream in the hearts of the younger cricketers, and perhaps will be a push for the BCCI to change its approach towards young talents participating in the higher leagues. The board might look in that direction in the following days, but there is clarity today-Vaibhav Suryavanshi's fearless batting has not only entered the annals of IPL history but also holds the promise of intently reforming the way Indian cricket nurtures young talents.
