The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to engage in crucial talks with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli regarding their One-Day International (ODI) careers. As per Dainik Jagran, the discussions will determine the path of India’s ODI side and whether the two stalwarts remain part of the long-term strategy. Reports indicate that the BCCI is evaluating a leadership transition in the format. Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a strong contender for captaincy. However, this move hinges on Rohit’s decision to continue and the duration of his involvement. The next ODI World Cup, scheduled in Africa in 2027, adds weight to this planning exercise. India last lifted the title in 2011, having finished runners-up in 2023 after losing the final to Australia. Both players have already stepped away from Tests and T20Is, marking significant transitions that the selection panel managed in the past year. Chairman Ajit Agarkar, under whose tenure India won two ICC trophies, has secured an extension until June 2026. Speculation suggests that the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia could mark their final outing in the format. There is, however, no official confirmation. The BCCI, sources say, seeks clarity for the long-term ODI blueprint while also introducing young talent ahead of major tournaments. PTI quoted a board official. “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time." For now, the board maintains a cautious approach, prioritizing structured dialogue before any formal announcements.
