The Board of Control for Cricket in India is likely to declare rules of player retention in the IPL 2025 later than ever. It is learnt that the rules could be announced closer to the BCCI's Annual General Meeting here on September 29. Generally, there is no correlation between the AGM and the IPL rules. Most people associated with the IPL feel retention policy will be announced after about 10 days to two weeks. The BCCI has not announced anything officially, but BCCI officials have been giving glimpses to team owners that there might be a delay. Team owners who recently got in touch with the BCCI were told that the policy might not be ready until end September. The BCCI had said initially that the retention rules would be announced by the end of August, but that deadline having passed, team owners have been briefed on the new timeline. Teams are likely to get until November 15 to decide on their player retentions. The RTM options, which give teams the option to match bids for players, are likely to come into play at the time of the auction, expected in December. Besides, CSK officials also maintain that should Dhoni decide to play next season, he would be one of their retentions, even if the BCCI permits only two retentions." There is also a speculation that the BCCI might make the retired international players as uncapped players. Not sure, though, whether that would make any difference to the budget of the teams in the auction. The general belief is making retired players uncapped won't change much because BCCI will adjust the budget on how many players each team keep. This means that teams can set player prices without having to be too anxious about precisely how much each retained player is worth.
