The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to enforce a strict prohibition on sponsorships from tobacco and cryptocurrency brands during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The move follows directives from the Ministry of Health, urging a complete ban on direct and surrogate advertisements linked to tobacco and alcohol. Crypto endorsements, already under scrutiny, will also face a clampdown. The BCCI's Apex Council will formally address this issue in an emergency meeting on March 22 in Kolkata, ahead of the IPL opener between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens. A key point on the agenda is “discussion regarding sponsorship from tobacco and crypto brands,” signaling an impending policy change. This decision aligns with the government’s larger framework to regulate industries that could pose risks to public health and financial security. For years, companies in these sectors have employed creative branding tactics to circumvent advertising restrictions. The crackdown is expected to impact multiple IPL franchises, some of whom have relied on sponsorship deals from these industries. The league itself has previously partnered with crypto firms, but regulatory uncertainties have cast doubt over such associations. Now, with an official directive on the horizon, teams will need to restructure their commercial portfolios. The BCCI is set to form the tournament’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and finalize venues for the marquee event, slated for October. This will mark India's first time hosting the Women’s 50-over World Cup since 2013. India, runners-up in 2005 and 2017, will aim for their maiden title on home soil. Additionally, discussions will be held regarding the structure of the 2025-26 domestic season. The selection of venues for India’s home Test series against West Indies and South Africa is also on the agenda. With a new leadership at the helm, the BCCI is making significant administrative decisions ahead of a packed cricketing calendar.
