The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) on March 1, 2025, in Mumbai. The primary agenda of the meeting is to elect a new joint secretary, following Devjit Saikia’s promotion to the position of BCCI secretary. Saikia, who previously held the role of joint secretary, took over the top position in January after Jay Shah’s departure to chair the International Cricket Council (ICC). In an official statement, BCCI confirmed that the SGM would take place at 12:00 PM IST at its headquarters in Mumbai. The meeting will focus on the election and induction of the new joint secretary. The statement says: "Notice is hereby given for a Special General Meeting (hereinafter referred to as SGM) of the BCCI which will be held at 12:00PM IST on March 1, 2025, at BCCI headquarters at Mumbai, to transact the business of Election and Induction of the Joint Secretary of BCCI." While the BCCI has not made an official announcement yet, there is significant buzz around potential candidates, including Avishek Dalmiya (East Zone), Rohan Jaitley (North Zone), and Sanjay Naik (West Zone), all of whom have been linked to the post. Election Process and Significance of the Role In a break from tradition, the BCCI has clarified that no election will be held for the position of joint secretary, similar to the process followed for the election of the secretary and treasurer. The requirement for a 21-day notice period to convene an SGM has been met. This meeting will mark the second SGM held in less than two months. The first was on January 12, 2025, when Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected unopposed as secretary and treasurer, respectively. The joint secretary plays a vital role in managing day-to-day administrative tasks, collaborating with board members to ensure smooth operations within the board.
