The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will make alterations to the support staff of the Indian team irrespective of the results of the fourth and fifth Tests of the on-going Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The bowling coach Morne Morkel and the assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate are set to be axed after the BCCI completes a thorough review at the end of the series. Although the two may stay in place until the Asia Cup in September because of the time factor, the Board plans to implement the changes before the home Test series against the West Indies, according to sources quoted by The Telegrap. Morkel and ten Doeschate were contracted by incumbent head coach Gautam Gambhir, but their input, especially in red-ball cricket, has been said to be below expectations. Gambhir himself experienced a tough beginning to his red-ball coaching career, with the team managing only four victories and eight defeats in 13 Tests before the Manchester Test. But the BCCI is not likely to replace the head coach at this point, with the team in the transition phase. Morkel had been in question for a while and the controversial move to play Anshul Kamboj, who was unable to bowl over 120 km/h, seems to have further hurt his reputation. There are reports that there is increasing concern regarding internal bickering between selectors and team management, especially pointed out by the recent exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav from all games in the series. The BCCI’s frustration has also been directed toward former South African pacer, who has reportedly failed to groom a single standout fast bowler nearly a year into his tenure as bowling coach. Likewise, ten Doeschate’s specific responsibilities have come under the scanner, with everyone questioning his contribution. While the BCCI has shown considerable patience, the upcoming home Test series could serve as an ideal window for restructuring the support staff.
