Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are now at the fag ends of their international careers. In the past 14 months, the greats have already retired from two of the three formats. There's only one left, and that's where both of them excel. We witnessed how well Rohit and Kohli play in 50-over cricket during the Champions Trophy this year. They are no longer spring chickens, but even so, they are likely Team India's best batsmen currently in ODI cricket. Yet they are 38 and 37. No matter how well they are doing, they are not the future. So when we came to know that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also considering Rohit and Kohli's future in terms of the ODI World Cup 2027, it seemed apt. The board wished to experiment with young players, considering that around 25 months are yet to go to prepare for ODI World Cup 2027. We then got to hear that Rohit and Kohli can retire after India vs Australia ODI series in October. The BCCI is not rushing to make a decision regarding the ODI careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The board intends to support the duo as long as they maintain strong performances, similar to their stance in Test and T20I formats. For now, the focus remains on preparing for the next ICC tournament, with the belief that Rohit and Kohli will inform them directly if they decide to retire. Here is what a BCCI source told PTI: “Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour. But from an Indian team’s perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available,” Both haven't played a cricket match since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 concluded in the first week of June. Kohli was seen rehearsing at the Mighty Willow Academy in London recently with Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Amin. Rohit, on the other hand, just came back from his London break and should resume rehearsing shortly.
