The Board of Cricket Control in India has confirmed that the Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer won't be availablefor red-ball cricket for six months due to recurring back issues. Shreyas was recently a part of the India A unofficial Test series against Australia A at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. He was given the captaincy and was hoping to be in the Test team against the West Indies at home. However, he wrote to BCCI and opted out of the second Test leaving the captaincy for Dhurv Jurel. BCCI has recently issued an official statement, saying Shreyas will be taking a break of six months. In this time, he will be working on his endurance. and fitness. The statement further clarified that Iyer's back issue has been the main reason why he was not considered for the irani Cup. The statement reads, “Mr. Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format." It added, "He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup." He struggled halfway and was thus dropped from the squad. He was then asked to play the Ranji Trophy, which he initially denied, which actually caused him the trouble. Shreyas was on painkiller injections during the 2023 ODI World Cup and had last played a white ball series against Australia before coming to the England Test series. The BCCI medical team, however, declared Shreyas Iyer fit. But Iyer was then spotted doing workload training at the KKR Academy in Mumbai. This had triggered Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI Chielf Selector, and eventually snubbed the former from the BCCI Central Contract.
