Despite the recent call for Test cricket players to play red ball cricket, senior star players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are unlikely to undergo any strict calls, like losing their BCCI contracts if they skip domestic matches. During the Border Gavaskar Trophy, head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasised the necessity of playing Ranji Trophy. After suffering from a massive batting massacre, the BCCI officials too decided to make Ranji matches mandatory. On Saturday 11, in a two-hour-long meeting in Mumbai, the BCCI officials decided that a player needed to show medical documents in order to get a leave from any match. This is applied to all, even the senior players. However, getting substracted from the BCCI contact list won't be applicable to the Ro-Ko duo. The second half of the Ranji Trophy will start on January 23. However, if Rohit and Kohli will feature, that is still a dilemma. However, if both decide to skip, they have to show medical causes but won't face a contract sunb. A report in Hindustan Times have supported the view, adding, "With Kohli though, there is a strong view within the board that if he is keen to play on, he should bat with pomp like before, and for that returning to the basics may be necessary." However, he was later dropped from the home series against England in 2024. Following that, he made himself unavailable for a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai in the quarterfinals. This got him removed from the BCCI Central Contract, with allegations of disobeying BCCI rules. Last year, BCCI made it clear that if a player is not on national duty, he must be available for the domestics. However, Shreyas Iyer appeared in the very next match, while Mumbai won the Ranji match. He later won the Irani Cup, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and even the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders. He is now leading Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. A similar snub happened to the wicketkeeper batter, Ishan Kishan, who decided to take a mental-health break. Despite the BCCI's directive for centrally contracted players to prioritize domestic cricket, Hardik Pandya was not snubbed like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Pandya, who has not played a first-class match since 2018 due to his back injury, informed the board his body cannot handle Test cricket.
