The former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has reportedly been approached by the Board of Cricket Control in India to train the young fast bowlers in the Center of Excellence. Till now, it was Troy Cooley who was with the side for the last four years as their fast bowling coach. However, after he turned 60, he retired from the post, keeping the position vacant. Following that, on February 9, the board had sent an invitation to be the CoE's fast bowling coach. Even though the name has not been finalized. A report from the Times of India said that BCCI sought the assistance of Zaheer Khan. He is even scheduled to have a specialized training camp soon. A BCCI source close to the proceeding informed the house that bowlers from different state teams have united at the CoE for a fast bowling camp that started on February 28 and will last till March 2nd at the CoE. The source was quoted saying, “A batch of fast bowlers has been invited from state associations for a special fast-bowling camp from Feb 28- March 2 at CoE in Bengaluru under the tutelage of Zaheer. Head of cricket at CoE VVS Laxman has taken keen interest in this initiative." He added, “Zaheer is very keen on taking up coaching roles. He was involved with Lucknow Super Giants and believes he can help the next generation of cricketers. It’s a good sign that a fast bowler of his stature has shown interest in BCCI programmes. However, it needs to be seen if he wants to take up a full-time job at CoE as it will require him to commit a lot of time away from his family." Apart from a few instances, the coaches are mostly from the Indian side, be it in the CoE or in the Indian national team. Not only that, there is a dearth of the cream of fast bowling options in all formats, which would require the former Indian legend's assistance. In the BCCI's invitation, it was mentioned that whoever gets appointed must have to work closely with the Indian team support staff. Among the present coaching staff in the Indian Men's team setup, the batting coach, Sitangshu Kotak, had been with the CoE earlier. Time will tell if Khan can walk on Kotak's path.
