To counter the growing concern about the inappropriate usage of high-tech devices inside stadiums and the restricted areas on match-day the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a tough new rule on this year's IPL 2026 edition. The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has now asked all the players and the support staff to hand over smart glasses and other sophisticated eyewear before entering restricted areas during matches. The rule comes at a time when wearable tech-enabled gadgets are gaining prominence among cricketers and even among the fans. Intriguingly, the development also comes just after India's star player Virat Kohli launched a campaign for AI-enabled smart glasses in India. Smart glasses campaign of Virat Kohli has captured the attention Oakley launched its Oakley Meta Performance AI glasses in India with Virat Kohli as the face of the campaign and the ad, recently turned out to be one of the most talked-about advertisements during IPL 2026. The promotional advertisement video showing Kohli on practice sessions, workouts, off-field preparations etc had gone on to get more than one billion views and approximately 5.3 million likes on social media. In fact Kohli was also spotted wearing the smart glasses during his practice sessions in the Indian Premier League 2026. However, the product, though highly publicized, is now under the radar and has faced restrictions from the BCCI inside the restricted zones on match days. As per a Cricbuzz report, ACSU has sent out a message to all the IPL teams that 'smart glasses, smart sunglasses and goggles with recording/communication features' will not be permitted in controlled zones on match-days. The report also further stated that 'several companies have been actively promoting their smart eyewear product to IPL players and support staff' and these products can "send text messages, make calls, record videos, livestream and connect through Wi-Fi or mobile data." This latest advisory is the consequence of a few incidents that raised security and disciplinary concerns inside the restricted areas during IPL 2026. Earlier this season, Romi Bhinder, team manager for Rajasthan Royals, was fined ₹1 lakh for using a mobile phone in the dug-out during a match. Following the incident, ACSU felt the need to make the regulations stricter and asked all players and support staff to deposit all the smart glasses and also the mobile phones and smartwatches they carry with the Security Liaison Officer before entering a restricted area on match day. Also the BCCI warned that strict action would be taken against whoever violates PMOA rules. The advisory clearly mentioned "With wearable technology becoming more sophisticated and concerns growing over covert communication methods, the ACSU's latest crackdown underlines the league's attempt to stay ahead of evolving integrity risks during one of world cricket's most commercially significant tournaments."
