Chepauk Super Gillies' opener K Aashiq found himself at the centre of a rare and startling moment during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) encounter on Monday. The game, held at SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore, witnessed his bat snap into two pieces mid-shot, one half crashing into bowler Emmanuel Cherian during his follow-through. The incident unfolded in the fourth over of the match against Nellai Royal Kings. After dispatching Cherian's first ball to the sweeper cover boundary, Aashiq prepared to launch another stroke. However, what followed stunned the players and onlookers alike. As he swung hard, the bat fractured violently, with the severed top piece flying directly toward Cherian. For a few seconds, play froze. The cameras had trailed the ball, but the replay later revealed the dangerous trajectory of the broken bat segment. CSG post 212, seal 41-run win despite momentary chaos Despite the odd interruption, Aashiq went on to contribute 54 runs off 38 balls, forming the backbone of Chepauk Super Gillies' total. Supporting efforts came from captain Baba Aparajith (41), Swapnil Singh (45), and Vijay Shankar, who remained unbeaten on 47. The team wrapped up their innings at 212 for 7 in 20 overs—a commanding score. Nellai Royal Kings’ reply lacked the momentum needed to match the pace. Captain Arun Karthik opened with a steady 51 from 42 deliveries, but consistent pressure from the Gillies’ bowlers choked the chase. Muhammed Adnan Khan, coming in at number eight, offered brief resistance with a quickfire 48 off 27, but the rest failed to capitalise. The innings folded at 171 for 9, handing Chepauk Super Gillies a 41-run victory. Emmanuel Cherian, the bowler struck by the flying bat piece, resumed bowling after the incident and showed no visible injury, though the visuals remained a key talking point post-match.
