The second ODI between India and England at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, faced an unexpected delay due to a floodlight malfunction on Sunday, February 9. The incident occurred in the seventh over of the second innings when India was chasing a target of 305. Despite opener Rohit Sharma (119) and Shubman Gill (60) giving a good start, the floodlight issue has disrupted the flow of the match, leaving the players agitated. It was not that the lights went off and came back, but was fluctuating every now and then until it went off totally. With the visibility on the field being affected, the umpires consulted with both teams, and after a brief discussion, players returned to the dressing rooms while officials worked to resolve the issue. Acting president Pankaj Lochan Mohanty acknowledged the need for modernization and mentioned ongoing discussions with the government for support. Speaking to the Indian Express, he said, “It was supposed to get renovated; this is a very old stadium. We have all the facilities, have made partial renovations as you can see. We have been in talks with the government." With the formation of a new government in 2024, the OCA has been in discussions about securing financial backing for improvements. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provides infrastructure funds, additional state funding is essential for large-scale redevelopment. Mohanty also spoke about the possibility of constructing a new stadium but emphasized that Barabati should not be neglected. He suggested that new sports facilities could be built elsewhere while ensuring Barabati remains an important cricket venue. Meanwhile, India sealed a 2-0 series win over England with a four-wicket victory in Cuttack. Rohit Sharma’s explosive 119 off 90 balls led the chase of 305, while Shubman Gill (60) and Shreyas Iyer (44) provided key support.
