Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Mithun has been voted as the new president of the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), the association of professional cricketers of the country. In the election on Thursday, Mithun defeated his rival. For almost a decade, CWAB was governed by former Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman and Debabrata Pal, who took charge after an unofficial annual general meeting in 2014. But with the removal of the earlier government and Naimur Rahman's disappearance from public life following legal issues, the association was in shambles. To enforce order, an ad hoc 13-member committee headed by Selim Shahed was constituted earlier this year to conduct fresh elections. The election became a watershed, as existing players dominated the shift to alter the association's destiny. The presidential election was the primary focus of the election, with Mithun contesting against former cricketer-turned-match referee Selim Shahed. Of 215 eligible electors, 190 polled their votes at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, with Mithun winning by a margin of 154 to 34. In his victory, Mithun reiterated that there should be peace between CWAB and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Although the presidential seat was intensely contested, the remaining seats in the 11-membered executive committee were unopposed. Shahriar Hossain Bidyut, the former opener, was elected as the senior vice-president, and Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan took the role of vice-president. National celebrities like Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Akbar Ali, Rumana Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Irfan Sukkur, Khaled Mashud Pilot, and Imrul Kayes were also chosen as executive members.
