Bangladesh have retained Najmul Hossain Shonto as Test skipper for another year, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board released a 16 members team for the coming two-Test matches against Sri Lanka on Wednesday (June 4). The series will also signal the start of Bangladesh's campaign in the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das is back in the team after having missed the last series because of injury. Fast bowler Ebadot Hossain, who had played the last international cricket in July 2023, has also returned. Left-hand spinner Hasan Murad and right-arm seamer Nahid Rana have also been brought back. Three players from the team that played the home Test series recently against Zimbabwe have been axed: left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Here is what BCB said in a statement while announcing the Test squad "Top-order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto has been retained as Bangladesh's Test captain for another year, continuing in the leadership role he assumed in 2024. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz also continues as the vice-captain, maintaining the leadership pairing that led the team in the previous season," The first Test will be take place in Galle from 17 June, whereas the second match is set to start in Colombo on 25 June. The Bangladesh squad will leave for Sri Lanka on 13 June. Talking about Najmul Hossain Shanto as skipper of the Bangladesh Test side, he has done some good work for the team, but as a batter, his performance has gone down after becoming the skipper of the side. He has an average of just 27.78 and has just scored 389 runs, which shows captaincy puts pressure on him. In the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, he will have a fair chance to improve his records in terms of batting.
