Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has reacted to Dewald Brevis' emergence, saying that the 22-year-old South African has had to bear the burden of expectations of being referred to as 'Baby AB'. The youngster, compared to AB de Villiers for a long time, bore the tag since his Under-19 days. Maxwell did admit that the moniker was more of a curse than a blessing, particularly in light of how rapidly Brevis found himself in the international limelight. Here is what Maxwell said as quoted by Yahoo News: “It’s a pretty heavy burden he had to have early in his career. He probably got fast-tracked a little bit into the South African side. He’s gone away, worked on his game, and he’s come back playing beautifully. His bat swing is really pure—he’s hard to stop when he gets going,” said Maxwell as quoted by Yahoo News. Brevis' recent performance has been nothing less than spectacular. During the second T20I against Australia, he blasted an unbeaten 125 from 56 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes. The stunning performance pushed him up the ICC T20I rankings, where he rose 80 places to 21st, earning a career-high 614 rating points. Brevis also got off to a promising start with Mumbai Indians (MI) but lacked consistency, ultimately leaving the franchise behind. IPL 2025 gave him another new beginning with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as he was signed on an injury replacement for INR 2.2 crore. He scored 225 runs in six games at a strike rate of 180, with two half-centuries, reasserting his T20 credentials. To date, Brevis has represented South Africa in two Tests and 10 T20Is and is vying for a place in the ODI team of South Africa against Australia. The Proteas will play Australia in a three-match ODI series, with the first match taking place on August 19.
