Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has warned the national team following poor results in all three formats. Naqvi stated in a statement that the board will make tough decisions to uplift Pakistan cricket standards. Pakistan were once arguably the strongest team in Asia however following the 2023 World Cup the team has failed to make the semi final stages of any major ICC competition. Both the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy saw Pakistan exit in the group stages respectively. Test cricket has not proved to be a brighter story as Pakistan continue to underperform in the World Test Championship. Although individual players are not named, it is implied that the senior figures will come under scrutiny and a shift in team approach may be inevitable. One such player whose performances continue to be debated is captain Babar Azam while undoubtedly one of the greatest batters Pakistan has produced over the last decade his strike rate and quick run accumulation in important fixtures is often questioned. Babar's ODI strike rate is at 86 however over the last couple of years his form has dipped significantly and T20 performances are not much better despite him being one of the leading run scorers, his strike rate has also been critiqued. One of the most discussed innings is when Babar Azam took 90 balls for 64 a match which the team was chasing 321 Babar and the Pakistani team always appeared to be miles away from the target. New Contract System Set to be Implemented The PCB chief also revealed that there will be a new structure introduced for central contracts. Players are set to be divided into Test ODI and T20I and the emergence category will also be re-established to reward domestic performances. Naqvi also confirmed that reputations will not be enough to secure selection hence Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi will likely need to improve performances in the domestic circuit and play for longer. With new revelations like this one it looks like Pakistan Cricket has a bright if quite daunting future ahead of them. Despite disappointing results and increased pressure with many major ICC tournaments coming up Naqvi is adamant that the team can only go up from here. For all Pakistani cricketers this message is clear team performance comes before individual achievement.
