Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is subjected to social media trolling after he declared that he resigned as the white-ball captain on Twitter. Babar said he wanted to focus on his game and reduce the pressure of being captain. However, some fans joked that he hasn’t won an ICC trophy yet but has quit as captain twice. He wrote, Dear Fans,I'm sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month. It's been an honour to lead this team, but it's time for me to step down and focus… — Babar Azam (@babarazam258) October 1, 2024 Babar Azam has not had an easy last one-and-a-half years. As captain, Pakistan was knocked out in the group stages of both the ODI and T20 World Cups. His performance also dropped in all three formats of the game, and he was criticized for his style of play in T20 cricket. Cricket fans in Pakistan mocked Babar Azam over the resignation move and dumped all the failures in the ICC tournaments at his door. However, Babar led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and to the finals in 2022. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Rizwan would be plausible candidates for the shorter formats. Shaheen replaced Babar as the T20I captain last year. However, he was removed from the national team after losing the series against New Zealand. And then Babar resumed his position as captain. Shadab Khan led Islamabad United to success in PSL 2024 and contributed to the Panthers' triumph in Champions Cup at Faisalabad. However, for most of the time after the 2023 ODI World Cup, which took place in India, he has been fighting to remain in the national side. So far, Rizwan has not captained Pakistan in ODIs or T20Is though he led them in two Tests against New Zealand during 2020-21. With the Australian tour almost coming, he seems the obvious replacement for Babar as captain.
