Ayush Mhatre made history at Chelmsford on Wednesday during the second unofficial Test between India U19 and England U19. The 18-year-old opener became only the second player to score over 200 runs in a Youth Test at a strike-rate exceeding 100, surpassing Brendon McCullum’s long-standing record from 2001. Mhatre ended the match with 206 runs from 170 deliveries, batting at a staggering strike-rate of 121.17. This eclipsed McCullum’s 232 off 214 balls (SR: 108.41) from his Youth Test against South Africa. The Indian youngster's aggressive approach saw him register 126 off 80 in the second innings, striking 13 fours and six sixes. That innings nearly helped India chase down 355. However, the momentum shifted after his dismissal to England’s Ralphie Albert, who picked up 4 wickets in the innings. Mhatre built two vital partnerships — 100 runs with Vihaan Malhotra (27 off 40), and 117 with Abhigyan Kundu (65 off 46). India’s total reached 217/2 when Albert dismissed Mhatre, sparking a collapse. From a strong position, India lost quick wickets, slipping to 232/5. Despite the late stutter, India managed to end the day at 290/6, settling for a draw. The result may have been shared, but Mhatre’s record-setting performance stood out, marking a rare milestone in Youth Test cricket — one that had remained untouched for over two decades.
