Indian opener Sanju Samson found himself at the receiving end of some playful teasing from teammate Axar Patel after India’s thrilling Super Eight victory over West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026. India successfully chased down a stiff target of 196 to seal a five-wicket win and confirm their semifinal clash against England on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium. During their chase India experienced pressure when the match reached its 11th over. Samson took charge of the game at that moment. He scored 97 runs without losing his wicket through 50 balls because he wanted to keep his team on track. His explosive knock featured 12 fours and four sixes which he hit at an outstanding 194 strike rate. Samson completed the match without any problems for India because he led his team to victory with four balls still in the game. The squad started its semifinals journey toward Mumbai through an airport which included Axar Patel who served as India's vice-captain. Axar asked Samson whether he felt relaxing after his exceptional display which occurred during their flight to Mumbai. He has played international cricket for more than ten years yet he still needs to establish himself as a regular player in India's T20I team. In 60 T20Is he has shown excellent performances through three centuries yet fans still awaited his breakthrough performance on international competitions. The T20 World Cup 2026 finally reached the moment when everything changed. Samson achieved a historic victory through his 97* performance which he accomplished during a demanding chase. He broke Virat Kohli's record which showed the most runs an Indian player scored during a T20 World Cup run chase. Kohli had earlier set the benchmark with two memorable 82-run knocks against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022. Samson’s unbeaten 97 now stands as the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup chase. It also ranks as the second-highest individual score for India in the tournament’s history. Only Suresh Raina’s 101 against South Africa in 2010 remains ahead of him.
