After a heartbreak in the recently concluded World Test Championship final against South Africa, Pat Cummins and his side are ready to start the new WTC cycle (2025-27) with a three-match Test series against West Indies, starting from June 25 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Ahead of the Test series, Pat Cummins opened up on several plans and strategies for the series and the future of the Test squad. He said that the management is ready to back Cameron Green at the number three position for the long run; they will allow him to take his time to cement his place in the Test team. Coach Gambhir provides huge update after loss at Headingley After recovering from a back injury, Green returned to international cricket during the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa earlier this month. The batting all-rounder, who was playing as a specialist batter, was given the No. 3 role, a position which was earlier occupied by Marnus Labuschagne. Marnus Labuschagne, who has been a consistent performer for the team at the number three position, has failed miserably to perform as per the team’s expectations in recent times. But the team is seeing Cameron Green as a long-term option at number three, especially when the Ashes is scheduled to be hosted by Australia this time. Cameron Green could have gone to fill in at number 4 in this Test series against the West Indies, but as the veteran and former skipper Steve Smith has been ruled out of the series with a fractured finger, Josh Inglis will fill his shoes and Green will be slotted at the number three. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Pat Cummins said: "I always like to not have too many moving parts. We see that [Green at No. 3] as a long-term option. I think going into last week, he's hitting the ball really well, he's moving really well. He had a Test match where it obviously didn't go to plan. Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We're really happy with where his game's placed and I dare say we'll get a decent run of No. 3." While speaking about Marnus Labuschagne and his recent Test dip, Cummins revealed that he needs to fight back to get back into the team. He further added: "I think him at his best is a well and truly an international standard Test batter. If there's an opening, we could see him fighting his way back into the Test team at some point. Obviously the focus now is giving a couple of other guys a go. He's had a pretty good run and obviously didn't make the most of it as well as he would like, so [we are] offering that opportunity to the next couple of guys.” Australia Squad for West Indies Test series Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster
