The Australian men's team has received an alteration to their T20I team for the India series, with Ben McDermott joining the framework as a surprise addition. Importantly, McDermott was included as a standby option to Matthew Short, who may be needed to perform an operation on one of his fingers on the right hand, having experienced bleeding from fielding in the ODI series. In the second game of the just-concluded series played at the Adelaide Oval, Short suffered a deep cut on his finger while standing in the inner circle, when he tried to take a catch in the Indian innings. He was removed from the field right away, where he received some first aid and dressing. The Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh asserted that the rotation of white-ball sides has become complicated because of the hectic scheduling and the frequency of matches being more than ever. In Marsh's view, the players are typically mixing up playing domestic cricket, with some players having injury setbacks, imposing a lot of changes to the initial squads. But, he also believes that the teams need to be accommodating with it. “We do have guys coming in and out, but I think that's been the nature of the white-ball teams over the last couple of years, with the schedules and how busy it is. We've got some guys going back and playing Shield cricket, and certain guys coming back from injury. It's just about being really flexible with that. Everyone understands their role when they do come into the team, and that it's about being really clear on that,” Also Read | BCCI Issues Latest Injury Update on Shreyas Iyer Summing up, Ben McDermott's insertion as a standby player speaks to the importance of depth and flexibility that has come to define cricket in the present era. With Matthew Short's injury issue and Australia's congested schedule across formats, such impromptu changes are now an aspect of the game. As captain Mitchell Marsh correctly observed, juggling player workload and injuries is never a straightforward matter, but flexibility will be central for Australia as they look to meet India in the upcoming T20I series.
