The image is becoming clearer before the Asia Cup 2025. Indian team will be selected on August 19 in Mumbai, and if early indications are to be believed, then the selectors never held back from believing in Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy. On the other hand, some of the bigger guns could be sitting out. That these players like Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are not sure shots, is a testament to how abundant India is in resources in the shortest of formats. India T20I captain Suryakumar, meanwhile, is back at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, recovering from sports hernia surgery. He has already resumed working in the nets, and his presence in the Mumbai selection meeting will virtually seal his place as India captain for the Asia Cup. Surya's T20I statistics are still impeccable. Even as captain, Suryakumar has won 13 out of the 15 T20 internationals. But his touch has gone after the T20 World Cup win. Nevertheless, the management sees him as the ideal candidate to lead the side in the UAE. Gill's vice-captaincy prospects have apparently suffered, as the top order is already stacked with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Surya himself. Gill has registered 893 runs in 22 games at a strike rate of 147 and an average of 47 since last year's T20 World Cup, but has not played a T20I since July and now finds himself pushed out. The case of Jaiswal is marginally different. The young opener had a stellar Test run in Australia and England, scoring over 800 runs combined, and also impressed in IPL 2025. But the selectors have asked him to focus on red-ball cricket, with his Duleep Trophy commitments for West Zone in early September clashing with the Asia Cup schedule. Traveling between the UAE and India, and subsequently preparing for the home Test series against West Indies, may be too taxing. But the most surprising omission might be that of Shreyas Iyer. The middle-order batsman had topped the run-scoring charts in IPL 2025 with 650 runs and looked ready to make a comeback to T20Is. His captaincy was also praised as he led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in a decade. But like Jaiswal, Iyer too will feature in the Duleep Trophy, and the selectors do not want players shifting formats with a rapid turnaround ahead of the West Indies Tests.
