Following a tough-fought 2-2 draw in the five-Test match series against England, Indian team now looks towards the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played between September 9 and 28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The news regarding the squad of tournaments for team India has indicated that star batsman Shreyas Iyer will not be included in the Men in Blue fraternity. Iyer, who has been a consistent middle-order member in the Indian side, Test captain Shubman Gill, and opener Yashaswi Jaiswal are expected to be left out for the next tournament. The reason for the same is reported to be the team management's reluctance to experiment beyond the existing combination comprising batters like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma, who are in form. So, Iyer's brilliance as a captain as well as a player, where he led Punjab Kings to the final in IPL 2025, has not worked in his favor for a T20I comeback. Iyer is not entirely out of the national setup, however. He was India's top batter during the Champions Trophy 2025 and has more or less settled the No. 4 position in the One-Day International (ODI) team. If he is indeed missing from the Asia Cup team, he will turn out for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy, a team that will be commanded by Iyer's Mumbai and India colleague Shardul Thakur during the 2025 season. A report earlier had spoken of his trip to Japan, but it is believed that he has come back to the garden city, and will be present for the team selection meeting at the BCCI Headquarters on August 19. The Asia Cup will kick off with a match between Hong Kong and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on September 9. India will face UAE on September 10 at Dubai. Their much-anticipated encounter against Pakistan will be held on September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Following their outstanding performance in England, the Men in Blue will be hoping to take their momentum into the continental T20 tournament. As reigning champions, India will be eyeing a record-extending ninth title in the history of the tournament. They won the last time in 2023, beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets at the final match in Colombo.
