The middle-order pair of star cricketer Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma are likely to find a recall to India's T20I unit when the All India Men's Senior Selection Committee convenes on Tuesday, August 19 to finalize the team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The Asia Cup, scheduled to take place completely in the UAE from September 9, is now set to see a comeback for the middle-order pair. Shreyas and Jitesh have not played T20Is since Gautam Gambhir became head coach in July 2024. Mumbai batter Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, while Jitesh, the stumper-batter based in Vidarbha, played his last game in the Indore T20I in January 2024 during the home series against Afghanistan. Jitesh is, however, likely to be the second-string wicketkeeper to Sanju Samson, who will open with Abhishek Sharma. The selectors and team management are on the same page about having an experienced middle-order batsman who is well-fitted for the slower conditions that can be anticipated in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), The Hindu reported. If Shreyas is included, it will pit Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh against each other in a difficult selection decision since both were included in India's previous T20I team against England in January-February. Jitesh, who was instrumental for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first IPL title win, is likely to replace reserve wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who had been Sanju Samson's back-up in the series against England. With Mohammed Shami not available as he has been kept with the East Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, a pacer's position is vacant, bringing about the question of whether to bring back Bumrah or provide Prasidh Krishna an opportunity following a strong IPL performance, in which he was the Purple Cap winner. Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has made a full recovery from a sports hernia, is likely to join the selection meeting where his insights will be very important since the Ajit Agarkar-chaired selection committee is also keen on assembling a side in mind for the home Men's T20 World Cup in 2026, in which India and neighbouring Sri Lanka will co-host. Speculation has been rising about Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal making a comeback to the T20I squad. However, the management appears determined to stick with the group that has thrived under Gambhir, securing 13 victories in 15 matches since he took charge. With little turnaround time between formats, the final of the Asia Cup on September 28 and the first West Indies Test on October 2 in Ahmedabad, the selectors would probably want to keep Gill and Jaiswal available for red-ball duties.
